Who Owns Redwood City's Rental Housing?

Read our report here!

Because Redwood City residents are experiencing an unprecedented affordability crisis and community leaders organizing with Faith in Action Bay Area and the Affordable Redwood City campaign have proposed a rent control and tenant protections ballot measure as a solution, we asked:

Who owns Redwood City’s rental housing? Who causes and benefits from the rising rents in Redwood City?

We first characterized owners by owner business model, location and portfolio size to understand the consolidation of corporate ownership, out-of-town ownership and owners with large portfolios. We then shared observations about the connection between rent increases and the different owner characteristics. Finally, we examined ownership and rent increase trends at the neighborhood level.
